Prince William and Kate Middleton have asked her uncle to tone down his memoir, in case it reignites tensions with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, sources say.
An insider close to the Middletons exclusively told OK! how the Princess of Wales’ mum Carole had reached out to her brother Gary Goldsmith to make sure there are no private family details included in his book – especially as there are concerns that it could prompt another tell-all autobiography by the Duke of Sussex. Last month, it emerged that Kate’s uncle Gary was writing a book to give the Middleton family a ‘voice’ and to ‘fight back’ against claims made by Harry in his explosive memoir Spare.
However, the threat by the Duke himself that he has enough material to write another book has remained a constant worry for William and Kate, the source told us.
“There are disclosures they would never forgive him for if they were ever to be made public,” the insider added. “William and Kate are trying to avoid that at all costs. They don’t want a book to fan the flames which could set Harry off again.”
The source added: “Carole has made it very clear that there should be no private family business written about. Kate is afraid that it could provoke Harry into writing another book.
“Gary has already finished the first draft and a number of publishers have shown interest, but he knows it won’t get as much pickup if it’s only about him.”
In Harry and Meghan’s self-titled Netflix documentary released in December last year, Harry, 39, accused his brother of betraying his trust by trading stories to the press. He also described how William had reportedly screamed and shouted at him during a meeting about his and Meghan’s decision to quit as senior royals.
Harry also claimed many of the men in his family married “someone who would fit the mould as opposed to somebody who you are perhaps destined to be with”.
One story in Spare that caused shockwaves was Harry’s account of how William had “knocked me to the floor” during a confrontation at his London home in 2019. He also claimed Kate had made Meghan cry over Princess Charlotte’s flower-girl dress just days before the Sussexes’ wedding in 2018.
Gary, who has previously hit out the Sussexes’ unfair criticisms of William and Kate, said: “This made me see red. How dare Harry share such a confidence involving a young child?” He added that he thought Meghan was jealous of Kate because she made her royal role “look effortless”.
The source concluded that it was comments like this that the Wales family were desperately trying to avoid.
“It’s a bit like waving a white flag,” the insider said. “They’re hoping that if they keep shut so will the Sussexes.”
OK! has approached Kensington Palace for comment.
